Dzayer’s intent is to reveal the city of Algiers to those who don’t know much about Algeria. Dzayer originally means “Algeria” in Berber, but the term is commonly used to refer to Algeria or Algiers by all Algerians.
The film is a quiet reflection on the city of Algiers in a vibrant and energetic manner, disregarding history and politics, simply portraying casual arbitrary happenings. There is no real dialogue or plot, but instead a systematic string of events that present they reflect on the nature of the city and people. It is not meant to criticize Algiers, but simply to present the different social aspects of it.
I wanted people to understand the little things that make the place what it is. But I realized it’s not that simple - the ambience cannot be described, explained, or analyzed. It can only be seen, felt, and absorbed.
